This British made pocket knife, handmade in the UK at a small workshop for over 50 years is a genuine work of craftsmanship to be celebrated. Elegantly created by Trevor Ablett, a master craftsman who has been plying his trade since a young boy, one of the last surviving to still practice this art.
The knife features a 3" clip point stainless steel blade and is produced using techniques dating from the mid 1800's, taking even the most skilled cutler up to 3 hours to complete each one. Trevor Ablett is one of the few remaining craftsman knife makers creating British made pocket knives in a small Sheffield workshop, something he has been doing for over 50 years. Trevor is termed a "Little Mester" locally, little mesters they were called in their heyday in the mid-1800s: the legions of highly skilled, self-employed Sheffield craftsmen who were the backbone of what was then the world's cutlery and tool-making capital.
Working alone or with one or two employees, renting their workshops, little mesters mostly specialised in one aspect of their trade – forging, or grinding, or finishing – and often in one type of product: razors, scissors, surgical instruments.
Trevor Ablett, 71, is one of just a handful left. He makes traditional folding pen- and pocket knives. "Ordinary working knives," he insists. They are, though, quite exquisite: small, smooth, beautifully balanced and infinitely pleasing everyday tools, with blades of stainless steel, bolsters of polished brass and handles of English oak, redwood or buffalo horn.
